The works of Dries Lips establish a connection between scientific and philosophical viewpoints. He critically examines the line between science, philosophy and art, dissolving and blurring it. With his mainly photo based works he analyses the explanatory models of physics, cultural history, philosophy and their ostensible differences.
“In our mechanized universe, the metric system of measurement became absolute. Not the memory, nor the mind or the thought. However, a landscape is a product of culture, of convention, of a tradition built on myths.”
The history of industrialization confirms the demystification of nature and landscape. Through the concept of scientific investigation people lose their feeling of awe and see nature as something threatening. The idea of a resonance between our soul and nature seems outdated.
Dries Lips investigates this question on the basis of scientific methods. He describes the path of science into the image, explains the approximation and transforms it through a kind of inversion back into an “enchantment”. His works newly reveal the fascination for the complex structures of nature, it’s beauty and uniqueness and offer a reinterpretation of them.
In the Weltkunstzimmer, together with Thea Natalia Mantwill and Swinda Oelke, he creates a room installation with living algae. The work combines several elements, which are based on the sensitivity of and interaction within nature. The algae are exposed to an artificial circadian rhythm; they glow at night during movement or impact. In this cooperation, the three artists embark on a scientific as well as an artistic journey. All three are exact observers and combine in their work scientific investigations and physical as well as scientific imaging of the laws of nature.
